We sought answers by collecting 1,152 posts 287 users talk about their experiences with tracking technology sleep in five online forums ((bullet proof sleep, Lifehacker, connectedly, Gizmodo and quantified self).
This is what we found.
Understanding sleep patterns requires constant monitoring over a long period of time to identify patterns. In our analysis, many users expressed their lack of confidence in the technology. We know fans dream of consumption are not as accurate as clinical methods.
Almost all consumer devices track sleep duration and quality based on sensors that check the movement of the body, which is prone to errors.
Some people reported that the tracker thought they were awake, when in fact they were asleep. The problem was that his movement device improperly registered partner or a pet moving in her bed.
By contrast, a common mistake is when people are awake and stay still but the application thinks they are asleep.
Some users tried two or more applications at the same time for best results. But two scores have different sleep quality can make it even more difficult for the user to decide which technology to trust.
Many users reported that sleep tracking applications do not allow them to edit the data the way they wanted. Some people wanted to add entries later or correct errors.
The ability to export data was not well supported by most technologies. This was a problem for users who are in the displays of the applications is not very useful. They were hoping to be able to export data to be displayed in a way that helped them analyze the information. But without data export, this was not possible.
The most important issue that dominated these forums was how to make sense of the data sleep. sleep trackers have a lot of information to users, including the duration, time to light sleep or deep sleep, or wake time.
However, many users said they had trouble understanding the information without the knowledge related to sleep. They wondered what he meant by the level of quality of sleep, how many hours of sleep you really need every day, and the number of hours of deep sleep and REM (rapid eye movement) they need.
Finally, many people commented that the application lacked information on how to take action to improve sleep.
sleep can provide people with a knowledge of their sleep patterns and a possible lack of sleep. But they do not provide people with support on how they can improve their sleep. Therefore, a person asked what to do:
buy a new mattress? Move to a different apartment? Work harder?
What can you do?
Clearly there are important design considerations for future tracking devices dream that arise from our findings. Fixing things such as discomfort, limitations of battery and inaccurate tracking to be a strong focus for manufacturers.
Users want ownership of their data, including the ability to access, edit and export the data sleep. Most importantly, users need support to help them understand how the technology works, what the data means and how to improve your sleep.
It is important that any device that we get to bed should help us sleep instead of interrupting our sleep.
