Nothing lasts forever, but it may seem to anyone who has a pet that has been sprinkled by a skunk.
the From Homestretch Jenny Howe learned that lesson on Tuesday, when her Prefontaine family dog was sprayed at 3:30 a.m., which put Howe on a frantic search at Google to reduce the stench when all stores were closed.
Howe spoke with Dr. Dirk Dekens, owner of the Montgomery Village Veterinary Clinic, about how pet owners can deal with the fact that skunks spray their dogs.

Q: We are going to do it well. That smell It is awful. What is it? Why is it only delayed?
TO. It persists because it comes from the aromatic glands of the skunk. And if you've ever been around to see a ferret, chances are you've also noticed some smell, especially if they have not been perfumed. When they spread over your dog or over yourself, yes, you can get pretty bad for a while.
P. It is the most unpleasant and that's why I used the solution of peroxide, baking soda and soap to wash dishes. What do you think about that?
TO. It's an excellent recipe to use and, in fact, I have the formula here for interested people: one liter of hydrogen peroxide at three percent, a quarter cup of baking soda and a teaspoon of liquid soap. Mix everything together. Do not have it prepared in advance because if you leave it in a bottle, it could explode in you.
Rub it well inside your puppy and, of course, if it is a longer furred dog, you may have to rub a little more. But do not leave it for a long time, because the concern with peroxide is that if you have a dog with a beautiful shiny coat, it could make it a little clearer afterwards.
Q: Is that the best solution? Is there anything else you recommend?
TO. It's a good solution when you do this at three in the morning, yes. But there are some other products out there. There is a product called Skunk Off, which will be prepared in advance.

There is also a good natural product called Nature & # 39; s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. The beauty of this product is that it is quite natural and you can even use it in your washing machine. So, if there is any toy that is affected by the smell or the bedding in which the dog has been lying, you could simply throw it in the washing machine and help eliminate some of the odors.
You used to say that tomato juice is the first thing people think about. It just does not neutralize properly. Take care of the smell, but it will not neutralize it.
Q: Apart from, you know, the nuisance of the smell, what kind of physical risks could there be if you spray your puppy?
TO. Apart from the annoying smell, there is a risk that something gets in the eyes. Of course, if that happens, you should rinse your eyes with a good type of eye wash as soon as possible and for a good period of time.
But typically it will only be a temporary discomfort.

Q: Will Pre go out and chase a skunk again? Are you going to forget that you had this terrible experience?
TO. I'm sorry to say it, but I'll try again, until I get that annoying skunk. My advice to you, Jenny, would be to make sure that when you take your dog out, keep him tied even if it's at 3:30 in the morning.
And if you know where the skunk lives for the moment, it just takes a long detour. They also share the city and the land with us, so you do not know if this skunk could have babies in your study right now.
Just put the leash on, control your dog and that should avoid many unpleasant experiences like the one you just had.
