In 2001 I weighed more than 400 pounds. I have tried every diet I could think of losing weight. I even worked face to face with the late Dr. Atkins for two months, and after charging me thousands of dollars, the best he could do was yell at me for being so fat.
Each tried diet ended the same way. There would be a whole list of foods that I was not allowed to eat. I follow the diet to the letter. I lose a little weight through brute force and willpower. Then there would come an inevitable point when I could not take it anymore and I would have a huge excess. Whatever the weight he had lost in the diet could reoccur within days, and a week later I would be 5 pounds more than when I started the diet. This pattern of losing 10 pounds and gaining 15 lbs started in 1990, until September 2001 reached my peak of 409 pounds.
Then the turning point was. On September 11, barely escaped being on UAL flight 93. That experience made me feel like I was living on borrowed time. Here I was killing myself working in a high stress job that he hated Wall Street, and the universe had given me a second chance.
So I decided to get off the diet roller coaster once and for all, and decided not to diet again. Instead he would try to figure out why my body seemed to be forcing me to gain a lot of weight. I decided to find out what I could do to get them to want to be thin again. Armed with a solid background in biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, I spent 12 hours a day to research everything I could about hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters and massagers chemicals that cause weight gain.
I learned that sustainable weight loss is not about counting calories, but to create the right hormonal environment in your body that is conducive to weight loss. From stress and emotional problems can cause hormonal environment unfavorable, the issue must be addressed from the perspective of the mind-body. We need to adopt a holistic approach that looks at our psychological and emotional life, as well as what and when we eat.
Over a period of two and a half years I have lost 220 pounds without dieting. I’ve been the same weight now for over 10 years and still do not diet. As what I want, when I want.
These were the key to my transformation:
1. I stopped dieting and began to nourish my body
I have learned through my research that my body was dead from chronic hunger for certain key nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids, live foods and high quality protein. I made sure that I really gave much high quality nutrients as possible. If I wanted junk foods like candy, chips or pizza, I would eat them every time they wanted, without hesitation. Eventually I lost all taste for junk food like my body learned to prefer high-quality, nutrient-rich foods.
2. Curé my digestion
discovered that one of the reasons why it was so badly starved of nutrients is that my digestive processes were compromised, so I could effectively extract the nutrients from the food he was eating. Digestion problems also can cause inflammation and inflammatory hormones put our bodies in fat storage mode. I started eating a lot of fermented foods and cultured, and take probiotics and digestive enzymes in order to normalize my digestion.
3. I have a CPAP machine for my sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a condition that affects many people overweight. It creates a hormonal environment in the body that stimulates weight gain by making high levels of cortisol, leading to cravings for junk food and insulin resistance. Sleep apnea is easily treated with a CPAP machine. The machine blows air into the nose and mouth to keep the windpipe open, so you can sleep all night without problems.
Most people who have sleep apnea do not even know they have it, although people living with’d know, because people with sleep apnea snore very loudly. It turns out that was one of the worst cases of sleep apnea that my sleep study technicians had seen. From the moment I arrived the CPAP machine started having more energy and less junk food cravings. And the weight began to disappear forever.
4. I started using practical mind-body to reduce stress
Like sleep apnea, stress causes high levels of cortisol and hormones inflammatory. These hormones lead to constant cravings and put your body into storage mode chronic fat. Many people do not realize how important it is to learn how to reduce stress. I started meditation and visualization each morning, which I found to be extremely effective in reducing stress.
5. I have created a much more sustainable life
I also lowered my expenses, he moved to a more affordable house and started to grow some of my own food. My life felt much more sustainable and felt calmer and more compatible. I loved knowing that at any moment I was hungry could go into the backyard and eat something fresh and full of vitality. Stress hormones, which are no longer coursing through my system, wreaking havoc and turning my body into a fat storage machine.
6. I worked through some major emotional problems
Some people feel safer with the extra weight on your body. It is as if the body uses as a buffer weight of the world. I was in that situation and I knew I had to deal with the emotional problems that were making my body feel insecure. I started doing visualization practices that helped resolve past traumas and to get my body feel safer to let go of the weight.
Over the years I have found that 65-70% of the clients I work with are using weight as a form of protection. This is what I call “emotional obesity.” When working through the problems that are causing obesity and emotional break the association that fat equals safe, the body is much more willing to put aside the weight. After I broke this partnership and weight no longer served its purpose – ie armor of fat no longer made me feel safer – the weight of all but left
7. Me. detoxified my body
After he had lost about 180 pounds I started to make a lot of research about toxins and how the body processes and handles toxic chemicals . It turns out that the body uses fat cells to store excess toxins. I realized that the last 40 pounds over my body was holding on was because it was a storehouse of accumulated toxins. I started doing what I call a “lifestyle detox”. Basically, I started to wash my body with a lot of alkaline liquids, such as water with lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, green, green super juices and lots of salads and sprouts. That did the trick, because I lost the last 40 lbs much more quickly than I lost the first 40 pounds, so that the rate of my weight loss continued to accelerate until the end.
Taking a mind-body approach that nourishes the body and reduces the physical, mental and emotional stresses that cause weight gain is the most sensible and sustainable way to lose weight. I have worked with tens of thousands of people in 60 countries offering this approach and we are getting amazing results.
