Tea and grape compounds could help burn fat

Natural Health News – Supplements containing antioxidants epigallocatechin-3-gallate and resveratrol can help control weight, according to a new study.

The researchers recruited 38 overweight and obesity, with an average age of 38 and randomly assigned to receive a supplement with 282 mg of EGCG and 80 mg of resveratrol per day or a placebo for 12 weeks.

The results showed that the combination of polyphenols was associated with significant increases in oxidative capacity in muscle fibers, compared with placebo. mitochondrial respiration was also found proved significantly higher after supplementation of EGCG plus resveratrol.

In simple language the study, published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that supplements helped the body to burn fat more efficiently.

a small study has examined the effect of a daily supplement of EGCG polyphenol resveratrol ad in helping control weight and improve metabolism.

Only 12 weeks of supplementation improved mitochondrial capacity and fat oxidation in the participants, the researchers say they can play a role in preventing long term weight gain and preventing the worsening of insulin resistance. [/article_box]

Importantly, capacity and fat improved mitochondrial oxidation can improve fitness and play a role in preventing weight gain and worsening insulin resistance in the long term, “they wrote researchers from Maastricht University medical Center, DSM Nutritional Products, and the University of Wageningen.

benefits of polyphenols

The potential beneficial effects of polyphenols and EGCG and resveratrol include improved insulin sensitivity, reduced markers of oxidative stress, reduction of inflammation, prevention of weight gain and insulin resistance (in rodent studies), reducing fat absorption in the intestine and stimulating mitochondrial biogenesis by activating SIRT1 (SIRT1).

Resveratrol, found in foods like red grapes, raspberries, black chocolate and some red wines, is most associated with activation of SIRT1, a gene which is also activated during calorie restriction in various species, and linked to longevity.

EGCG is one of the four major polyphenols found in fresh tea leaves, with epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC).

Green tea contains between 30% and 40% water-extractable polyphenols, while black tea (green tea that has been oxidized by fermentation) contains between 3% and 10%.

Confirming previous findings

A previous study from the same researchers found that EGCG term shorter resveratrol supplementation increased spending energy in men, compared to placebo.

Unlike the previous study, however, not significant for energy expenditure effects were recorded, researchers said. Nor was any effect on insulin sensitivity registered. But, researchers say

Although no significant effects on the total fat mass were evident, found that EGCG + resveratrol tended to decrease the mass of visceral adipose tissue [approximately] 11% compared to placebo. ”

Because visceral adipose tissue is known to be detrimental to metabolic health, the reductions observed in this study may be of physiological importance in the long run.
