the ancient Greeks believed essential oils in the highest regard, in the belief that rosemary oil, in particular, could improve memory. In the 15th century, users of rosemary oil believed to be a disinfectant . The documented , the clinical use of essential oils for mood disorder dates back to Europe 1920 . Throughout the centuries, people have reported consistent effects for essential oils such as rosemary and lavender.
In the last decade, researchers often had not formally studied essential oils, wanted to know – This is just a belief? A placebo or the power of suggestion? Or is that the claims of these momentous, complex oils actually produce a biological change?
In a controlled blind study in 2003 published in International Journal of Neuroscience , researchers not only confirmed a widespread belief about rosemary oil but unknowingly they showed the importance of knowing the recommended oils like lavender uses.
M. Moss and wanted al evaluate the olfactory impact of essential oils (EOS) of lavender ( Lavandula angustifolia ) and rosemary ( Rosemarinus officinalis ) on cognitive performance and mood in healthy volunteers.
One hundred forty-four participants believed they were simply taking a cognitive test Drug Research (CDR). That is, a test of computerized cognitive assessment battery. Each individual was randomly placed in one of three cubicles with doors :. One containing rosemary EO scent , one containing lavender scent EO , and the other, none (control)
Before exposure to the aroma (or none) , questionnaires completed visual analogue mood, and then after completion of the test battery. Participants were deceived as to the true purpose of the study until completion of the test in order to avoid the effect of anticipation to influence the data. The CDR proven cognition and memory with or without exposure to OE.
In particular, lavender actually showed a significant decrease in performance of working memory and times of delayed reaction for memory and based care tasks compared to controls. ( Lavender is used usually to anxiety .)
Romero on the other hand, significantly improves the overall performance of quality memory and secondary memory factors, but researchers believed that impairs speed memory compared to controls. Better memory, slower execution memory.
Regarding the factor of mood – meanwhile the control groups and lavender were less alert that the group of rosemary – It was found that both groups lavender and rosemary be more content than the control group.
A psychiatry criticism (against rosemary?) Review the results of this study were mixed at best, but this study is still cited not only in other EO studies, but the cognitive and mental health. Interestingly, the review mentioned another study showing that instead of decreasing anxiety rosemary – could actually increase during an anxiety attack . (It makes sense when you consider the factor of acute rosemary alert.)
By sorting through belief and fact, researchers are confirming old beliefs of age on the health benefits of OE, but also demonstrates the importance of knowing the EOS ‘ intended purpose . Knowing the difference can improve their welfare and prevent unwanted results.
In conclusion, M. et al Moss wrote:
These findings indicate that the olfactory properties of these essential oils can produce objective effects on cognitive performance and subjective effects on the mood.
