How to get rid of fleas at home

Getting rid of creatures, be they ants, rodents or any other kind of creepy crawlers, is a pain. And getting rid of fleas can even be a headache. But fortunately, we have all the scoop to take it from zero to serene in (almost) no time.

What causes fleas?

Adult female fleas are able to lay up to 50 eggs per day (yes, per day!), And live up to 100 days in remote places that skew the chances of survival in favor of fleas. The most common source of fleas are animals: pay attention to your own pets, but also watch out for dogs, stray dogs and wild animals in the neighborhood that visit the garden.

Fleas love hot and humid climates, which are out of direct sunlight and are relatively quiet. Therefore, it is crucial to pay special attention to the shaded areas of the yard or the house, to the crawl spaces or to the doghouses and other animal enclosures, all areas where fleas are happier and more likely to reproduce.

How to detect fleas

If you've seen one or two fleas, there are likely to be more. (Statistics say that for every flea you put in your eyes, there could be another 99 hanging around in the shadows. Oh, look!) Look closely at the pet's bedding, carpets, furniture bases and any dark areas and hides little traffic that can often be overlooked. .

Keep your eyes wide open to detect small dark spots known as "flea dirt", a mixture of blood and feces (how disgusting!) Which is often more visible than the fleas themselves. Flea larvae actually use this "dirt" as a food source, so anything they detect should definitely cause concern. This probably sounds alarming, but in most cases, a deep and deep cleaning routine can eradicate the problem in a period of 10 days to a month.

Clean your pets. Take a fine tooth comb and carefully inspect your pet's fur, carefully looking for fleas in all their forms: eggs, larvae and adults. Have a container with hot water and soap on hand to remove any fleas you can find, and make sure you have the help of your veterinarian to determine if your pet's flea medication is appropriate and, of course, effective.

How do I get rid of fleas in my house?

To maximize the results of deep cleaning, it is imperative to remove (and wash) all bedding and pet bedding. Remove pets from the house and move all furniture so that hidden areas are fully exposed. Vacuum completely (experts recommend a beater bar style) and throw away the vacuum bag (or clean the waste container) when finished. Aspiration does more than clean the area and remove flea dirt: the suction forces the larvae to leave prematurely from their insecticide-resistant buds, which facilitates their work when the time comes to start treatment.

Repeat the deep cleaning procedure of the vacuum every two days for a period of 10 days to a month, depending on the severity of the flea problem and how often you detect fleas while cleaning. Wash pet bedding every week for at least a month to make sure that annoying insects do not return.

Keep in mind that if the problem is serious, or if you have a heavily carpeted house, it may be necessary to steam clean after vacuuming.

How to detect fleas in your yard

All it takes to evaluate your outdoor flea population is a pair of tall white socks. Put on a pair and take a walk in the courtyard, keeping your pace slow to allow insects to join. At the end of the walk, check if you have fleas, "ground fleas" or eggs attached to your socks. Only some? Do not worry there. Are your socks almost covered? It's time to call the lawn experts.
