How Marijuana Destroys Cancer Cells While Leaving Healthy Cells Alone

For more than 40 years, incredible powers to combat cancer research as evidence of cannabis has been either silent or completely ignored by the US government . It continues to drive other treatments, a lot of time at the expense of your overall health, and conducts strict enforcement of marijuana laws.

The main problem in medical research in marijuana is the fact that the federal permit is required in order to conduct the investigation, because of their illegal status programming 1.

Senior Policy Analyst National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), Paul Armentano, gathered together the results of multiple studies into force of marijuana in cancer cells. It was found that the US government has been avoiding hear some fairly linear conclusive evidence on board.

What do studies show about cancer and cannabis?

The report Armentano of cannabinoids (the active compounds in cannabis) and ways in which they can have an impact on cancer cells, brought together decades of research on the subject.

begins his study with a quote from the conclusion of another comprehensive study. “Cannabinoids have activity against cancer … [and may] possibly represent a new class of cancer drugs that slow cancer growth [and] … inhibit the metastatic spread of cancer cells.”

Armentano then goes back to more than 4 decades ago, with a 1974 study by the Medical College of Virginia. This study found that cannabis inhibits the growth of malignant tumor cells in both cultures and mice. The study was published in the Washington Post and concluded that the main cannabinoid in marijuana, THC, “the growth of lung cancers, breast cancer slowed, and virus-induced leukemia in mice laboratory and prolonged his life by up to 36 percent. ”

Despite these promising findings, the government rejected any future financing of 20 years. That is, until a study of the mid-90s by the National Toxicology Program of the US. Once again, they realized that cannabis had a positive impact -. Mice and rats given high doses of THC over long periods of time experienced greater protection against malignant tumors than untreated mice

The results of this study were actually kept secret. That only came to light after leaked in 1997 to a medical journal, which in turn released them to the national media. Even then, the government has not occurred in the financing of the studies on the subject in the United States.

Fortunately, in the last two decades or so, research has intervened abroad and continued to report on the capabilities to fight cancer cannabinoids. These studies have found it stop many types of lung prostate, breast cancer and even brain cancer. Italian researchers reiterated, “[Cannabinoids] have shown great power in reducing tumor growth of glioma … without affecting the viability of [healthy cells].”

These findings are of vital importance as traditional treatments such as chemotherapy are ruthless – not to discriminate between cancer cells and healthy ones. It seems as if cannabinoids can highlight cancer cells.

How is cannabis kill cancer cells?

According to the PBS documentary “Clearing the Smoke: Cannabis Science” (2) this incredible power is due to receptors on cells throughout the body. You can think of the receivers almost as “blocks” and when the right “key” comes and connects with the lock, a message is released. Typical messages might be that the body is under attack, and the immune system has to respond, or even something as simple as a record of pain.

In the case of cannabis, the researchers found two cannabinoid receptors in cells throughout the body. For these receptors, cannabinoids present in marijuana are the “key” of utmost importance. These cannabinoid receptors are called CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain, but are present in many important organs throughout the body such as the heart and liver.

CB2 receptors are found in cells throughout the immune system. When these cells mutate and become cancerous, no longer they die as normal cells, but grow and spread unchecked. Importantly, however, still they retain their CB2 receptors, even when they become cancerous.

These CB2 receptors act essentially as a target for cannabinoids present in marijuana. When these compounds hit the receptors, key and lock together and launch a critical message -. Cannabinoids tell cancer cells to die

Surprisingly, what follows is just that – cells “commit suicide” (2). This is how cannabinoids are able to kill cancer cells effectively.

The future of cancer treatment?

So far, there is still much more research needs to be done for the benefit of cannabinoids in the fight against cancer to be fully understood and appreciated. It seems as if the social stigma associated with cannabis has damaged much of the medical research for too long, but the future is starting to look a little greener
