laundry detergent is a simple change of store bought homemade, and alternatives DIY are often as effective and much less expensive. I shared my Homemade Laundry Soap before, but they have gotten so many questions over the years that I decided I deserved a follow-up post.
examined me for the first time the idea of laundry detergent homemade when the mother of a friend did it while I was visiting her home 15 years ago (oops, I felt old!) And I I have been experimenting with recipes since I had to make my own clothes (except for the university definitely the most scented chemical type then … live and learn! is used). This version is a current style of my original creation.
vs laundry detergent laundry soap
It is important to note that the laundry detergent soap and clothes are not the same thing. Soap, is by definition a mixture of fats and oils with an alkali or base, like this soap recipe crock pot using a mixture of olive oil and coconut with a base of lye and water.
too simplistic definition would be that soap it is (or can be) natural, while the detergent is most often synthetic. So detergents recipes for “natural” clothes are almost always talking about soaps, detergents and actual recipes are rarely natural.
From store bought versions are called “laundry detergents”, I chose to call this tutorial one DIY laundry detergent recipe, but use a soap base. I used these recipes (or variations) for years and as effective as regular store bought meeting laundry detergent when used correctly.
High Efficiency insurance?
That’s the question I’ve gotten most of the more than 100 comments on my original recipe laundry detergent. I personally do not have a high efficiency washer, but I heard from dozens and dozens of readers who make dozens and have used this in a washing machine HE smoothly.
The main concern with a washer it is to create too much foam, so a low-sudsing soap or detergent is suggested. This recipe is low foaming, by definition and must be safe for HE, but check with the instructions that come with your machine to ensure that before using.
security service laundry detergent ingredients
Many readers questioned the safety of borax in my original recipe. After much research, (yet) I feel completely comfortable with borax laundry soap and other uses that do not come into direct contact with food. Here is my opinion of borax but do your own research and make sure you are comfortable with your use (or any ingredient) before using! If you are still on the fence, This is a recipe that is free borax …
Why Natural laundry detergent?
changed me to laundry detergent made of natural home or soap to avoid the use of chemicals, fragrances, colors and additives in many regular detergents, but it is also home is much less expensive and very easy to do .
Even if you are starting with the natural life and would not dream of make your own deodorant soap is a simple switch that can do without much effort and without expensive special ingredients.
laundry detergent ingredients …
this recipe laundry soap homemade uses three basic ingredients:
- borax : . A naturally occurring mineral I get mine here
- washing soda : also called soda ash, it helps to remove oils and residues. Available at most local grocery or here
- grated bar soap :. Like Dr. Bronner or home. Now use this soap coconut oil recipe for our household detergent. Many recipes call Fels Naphtha works well, but has some questionable ingredients so we avoid it. I personally think the soap coconut oil works better anyway
Optional Accessories :. have also experimented with adding Oxi-Clean boosters or oxygen for this recipe. I’ve noticed that not do much good when mixed in the recipe, but they can be great when added to especially dirty loads of laundry along with homemade soap.
Another optional addition is essential oils for the aroma. I prefer lemon or lime essential oils added to the powder recipe, although most of the smell is gone after drying
clean clothes :. Two forms
This recipe can be done in two ways: as a powder or a liquid. Dust is much faster to perform and requires much less storage space, but the liquid is more effective for treating the stain. The liquid also appears to be more effective for people with hard water.
currently I use the powdered version and use of other natural products to treat spots (see below). Both recipes use the same natural ingredients, so just pick the one that is most convenient for you. This recipe is my version powder, and is the liquid version in this post .

Treatment of Natural spots
laundry detergent homemade works well, but formulas will not work as well as chemical formulations stain release and cold water Store. Treaters have a variety of naturally stain on my laundry room and use them depending on the stain.
I also keep a small bottle of diluted Sal Suds in the bag for immediate treatment of spots on the fly and it worked very well. Even in the wine. And mustard. And red clay baseball field. And … well, you get the idea.
