Health guidelines for vitiligo patients

Chief consultant dermatologist at the National Skin Hospital, Mansa Devi Complex, Dr. Vikas Sharma explained that vitiligo is probably one of the longest known illnesses of humans and simultaneously one of the most misunderstood.

Dr. Sharma said that patients with vitiligo should exercise and engage both indoor and outdoor sports activities. Moderate exercise is useful and beneficial. All the talk about the influence of diet as fish and milk, etc is all myth and several studies have found no link in the etiology of the disease with these dietary agents.


Dr. Sharma that in the last 4-5 years, the focus of research in developed and developing countries around the world have been in search of new treatment modalities and strategies for vitiligo. The results have been very encouraging with the evolution of new molecules and strategies for the treatment of this chronic skin disorder. The advent of new molecules have revolutionized the entire therapeutic approach. The change is not limited only to pharmacotherapy but dermatologic advent of new lasers and lights have increased treatment options for this disease.

About 0.5 to 1% of the world population that is as much as 65 million people have Vitiligo. Half of the people who have vitiligo develop it before age 20, most develop it before age 40. The disorder affects both sexes and all races equally, however, is more remarkable, dying and cosmetically disfiguring skin of India.

Epidemiological data in India have shown that the average age of onset between males and females are, respectively, about 25 and 20 years. About 20% of patients with vitiligo have at least one first-degree relative with vitiligo.

Vitiligo is a skin disease characterized clinically acquired by completely white spots, or “spots” and microscopically by the total absence of pigment producing skin cells, melanocytes.

Vitiligo is not an infectious disease therefore is not a contagious disorder that many people are unaware thereby subjecting a patient Vitiligo a lot of social discrimination.
