(NaturalHealth365) Many doctors tell their patients to take a aspirin a day to prevent heart disease. It has become a practice so accepted that patients I see in my clinic that began to take on their own just because they realized that it was a “good idea”.
I tell them to stop . Do not misunderstand me – Aspirin is one of the safest over-the-counter drugs there. However, you need to know more to make a decision.
Please note, aspirin is still a drug. That means there are still some risks involved in their use. The main risk is excessive bleeding . Other risks include kidney and liver failure ulcers, tinnitus and hemorrhagic stroke if you use it too.
During my travels around the world, I have found natural remedies that work as well, or better yet, for heart health. Some are exotic. Others probably already have in your kitchen … like ginger.
Most people think of ginger as a remedy for upset stomach. But it does much more.
Taking a little ginger every day can give your heart a real boost. That’s because it contains 12 most powerful antioxidant compounds that free radicals vitamin E. Antioxidants combat in your body. And flavonoids, a type of antioxidant found in ginger, are especially good for the heart.
One study examined flavonoid intake in the diet of 1,400 men. The researchers found that men who received the least amount of flavonoids had the worst diameter of the carotid artery and the highest risk of heart disease.
Ginger is good for the heart in other ways, too. Research shows that reduces oxidation, which can inflame the lining of the arteries.
In one study, researchers divided 40 participants into two groups. Half were healthy. The other half had a history of coronary artery disease. One group received 5 grams of powdered ginger every day, and the other received a placebo. After four weeks, had decreased oxidation by 18% in the healthy group and 23% in those with a history of heart disease.
Like aspirin, ginger functions as a blood thinner. And that means that prevents clot formation which could lead to heart attack or stroke.
Studies also show that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties . It works the same way makes aspirin, by blocking COX-2 – the enzyme that promotes inflammation. And inflammation is the major cause of heart disease and other chronic diseases.
If you want to take a supplement ginger, look for a capsule or tablet containing 5% gingeroles. You can find ginger supplements online or in most health food stores. I recommend starting with a dose of 100 mg per day.
But I prefer to use fresh ginger root in my kitchen . For me, one of the best things about ginger is its distinct flavor. real to any dish of meat or vegetable recoil is added, and is especially good in stir-fries. You can even sprinkle a little grated ginger on top for flavor and heart-healthy benefits. (That’s what I do.)
I also like ginger tea. You can do it at home in just five simple steps:
1. Boil 4 cups water in a saucepan.
2. Peel a piece of 2 inches fresh ginger root and slice it into thin slices.
3. Add ginger in boiling water.
4. Cover it, reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
5. Strain the tea. Add honey and lemon to taste … and enjoy!
Ginger is a safe and natural substance. But since it has blood-thinning properties, you should talk to your doctor if you are taking other blood-thinning medications before you start taking a daily supplement of ginger.
