I am a great lover of Halloween and all the fun festivities that accompany it. I favor those rats, mice and other fake furry friends who tend to line up on the shelves in the halls of Target Halloween at this time of year. I'm even a big fan of the huge spiders that hang on cotton fabrics on the front porch of our entire neighborhood. But the idea of real Rodents and other pests that enter my house only give me goosebumps.

Along with our climate changes in Texas, unwanted pests will soon begin looking for your winter home. A warm and cozy attic is a main objective with its offer to provide water, food and a warm place to hide during the coldest months to come.

This fall, the worst type of Halloween visitor would be the guy who runs on my roof at night. Then, as you climb into the attic to get all those fall decorations, take note if you see signs of pests that invade your home. The signs can vary from noises and chewing marks, to feces and odors. Gross!

Common pests this fall

The most common pests that Austinites usually find at this time of year are mice, rats, raccoons and squirrels. What really worries me about these little nibblers is that most of them can also bring parasites, such as fleas and ticks, to their home. Larger hairy creatures, such as raccoons and squirrels, can tear off the shingles and throw trash cans in their effort to find water, food and shelter. The bigger the pests, the more damage they can do.

The best course of action is prevention and active monitoring, that way they are prevented from entering, instead of trying to get them out.

Many times, rodents only need a dime-sized hole to enter a house, so it is better to regularly monitor and maintain the following practices in your home:

Repair or replace broken screens
Place the mess in the holes
Remove food
Remove or seal the trash
Trim branches that can create an easy path to walk home

Capture and relocation

The fact that I do not want pests inside my house does not mean that I want them to be treated inhumanly … but surely I do not want to be the one who has to deal with their eviction notice. Pest & Lawn Organic Chem-free specializes in humanly trapping the largest wildlife breeds, such as squirrels, raccoons and opossums, and relocating rodents to a natural habitat. After relocation, Chem-free Organic will seal the entry points to avoid further damage to your property. These professionals will also eliminate excrement and disinfect the area to prevent the spread of the disease.
