The lines of laughter are not laughing matter if you prefer that your skin is soft for babies and without wrinkles. We speak with dermatologists Cindy Yoon-Soon Bae and Morgan Rabach and plastic surgeon Dr. David Shafer to analyze everything we need to know about laughing lines: what are they? Are you really laughing? How can you get rid of the laughing lines?
What are the laugh lines? What causes them?
The lines of laughter are vertical lines that extend from the sides of the nose and curve around the mouth and, sometimes, extend up to the chin. You are not the only one who has them: these lines are incredibly common. Shafer says there are two types of laugh lines: the nasolabial fold and the nasolabial fold. Explain that the nasolabial fold is the line between the upper lip and the cheek, and the fold is the skin or tissue that hangs over that fold. Both types develop over time from aging and other lifestyle factors.
"If you look back at your high school yearbook, probably half of people have nasolabial folds, so it's not necessarily a sign of aging," says Shafer. "People develop deeper wrinkles with age, weight gain and recession of teething or dental problems; the teeth no longer support the overlying tissue that makes the wrinkle deeper. "
Finding a treatment to reduce your appearance depends on whether you are dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that are seen with movement) or static wrinkles (wrinkles that are still seen when your face does not move). "We want to prevent static wrinkles because they can become more difficult to treat over time," says Bae. "The lines of laughter that you see when you're laughing are dynamic wrinkles and when you're not laughing but you're still there they're considered static. They are quite common since we use the muscles around our eyes and lips all the time when we blink, smile, cheer, etc. "
The case for fillings
The three doctors say that the most common treatment for laugh lines around the mouth are fillings, but Shafer emphasizes the importance of finding a board certified expert who understands the nuances of facial anatomy. "If you put too much filling in the wrinkle, it can be very soft, but it can also look bloated, this may seem strange around the mouth," he says. "That's why my approach is conservative. We can make a syringe and let it settle and then re-evaluate in about a week to see the patient's response and decide on additional treatment. "
Rabach likes fillings because the results of the line are almost immediate. "The fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, a sugar molecule that is naturally under the skin," she says. "Unlike Botox, which takes about a week to activate, the improvement with the fillings is seen immediately."
The case of Botox
When we smile and laugh, our mouth is not the only part of our face that moves. Our eyes get animated and wrinkles form as we move those muscles. To soften the lines of laughter that appear near our eyes, the three dermatologists suggest going to the Botox route. "Over time, it's like undoing a crumpled paper," says Bae. "It's the same mechanism of action when used in other parts of the face."
Rabach says he commonly uses Botox in the upper region of the face between the eyebrows, forehead and around the eyes. You will begin to see the results after a week and the smoothing of lines lasts between three and six months, depending on how fast you metabolize Botox.
Can you fix laughter lines without needles?
While exfoliation does not completely reduce the appearance of laughter lines, it inadvertently helps to soften the skin in general. Bae encourages daily gentle exfoliation with a cleanser that contains physical or chemical exfoliants or any topical product with alpha hydroxy acids. Shafer agrees, suggesting products such as SkinRetter AlphaRet exfoliating pads that contain glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acid.
The best skin care ingredients for laugh lines
TNS Essential Serum (1 oz.)
You can also reduce the appearance of laugh lines through your skin care routine. Look for products that contain ingredients such as retinol or vitamin C that promote collagen production. Shafer suggests SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum or Senté Dermal Repair Cream, since both work at the cellular level to improve skin and collagen repair within the skin. Bae agrees and tells him to look for retinoids to help prevent lines of laughter around the eyes.
You will also want to look for a serum or cream with hyaluronic acid to keep the skin hydrated and plump. "It works to attract moisture to the skin, causing a little natural volume," says Rabach. We love AHC's emulsion, serum, moisturizer and Aqualuronic masks: each contains three hyaluronic acid molecules of different weights to dramatically fatten and hydrate the skin (available at Target and Target.com in July).
What lifestyle factors cause laughing lines?
There are many ways in which you can reduce the formation of deep wrinkles through small changes in your daily life. Rabach says you should start with good habits, such as getting enough sleep at night, drinking in moderation and staying hydrated to keep your skin healthy. Bae highlights the importance of using sunscreen every day. "Daily sunscreen can help preserve your natural collagen and prevent worsening of the lines," she says.
Finally, all three dermatologists cite smoking as one of those external causes that can make laugh lines around the mouth more visible. Consider another reason to stop smoking that cigarette and JUUL for the sake of your overall health.
