Natural Health News – Including more cereal fiber in your regular diet could reduce the risk of premature death from several modern diseases, a new analysis claims.
The results, published in British Journal of Nutrition came from a meta-analysis of 14 studies that examined the intake of cereal fiber and its relationship with mortality.
The Iranian researchers included data from about 370,000 patients with cancer, cardiovascular disease 840,000 and 380,000 participants in trials assessing mortality from all causes.
There are many sources of dietary fiber, the researchers say, but generally those with the highest intake of cereal fiber had a 19% lower risk of death from any cause compared with those with lower consumption.
In addition, those who ate more cereal fiber had a 18% lower risk of premature death from heart disease and 15% lower risk of cancer death.

Multiple potential benefits
Despite purported health benefits of cereal fiber, the team conceded their mechanisms remain unknown.
