Flying ants swarm in warm weather when the queens are ready to form new colonies.
David Cross, Director of the Technical Training Academy, Rentokil Pest Control explained the phenomenon to Express.co.uk.
He said: "While warm weather is a welcome change to the recent flood of rains across the country, rising temperatures from the end of June to the beginning of July can also cause an unwanted increase in swarms of flying ants, giving rise to what is now commonly known as the day of the flying ant.
“When the temperature exceeds a certain point, large females and smaller males that have developed in neighboring nests of black garden ants go on air in large quantities and initiate mating flights.
"After mating, the females will start a new colony, while the males will die."
How to get rid of ants in your garden?
If you see flying ants in your garden, there is a simple way to get rid of them.
You can pour boiling water into any anthill you see near your home.
This will kill the ants that are still there and prevent others from returning.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) reveals that you must destroy the nests to sacrifice the ant population.
The organization states that this is difficult and says: "In most situations, it is better to tolerate the presence of ants."
Gardening website Know How states that Britons can get rid of ants in the garden with tobacco pipe.
Experts said: “To get rid of ants in the yard, you can soak the tobacco in water overnight and make tea with it.
“Discard wet tobacco and wear gloves when handling the solution.
“Pour the liquid over the ant hills and soak them. The ants will die.
How to get rid of ants in your home?
You can help prevent ants from entering your home by using insecticidal dust on the frames of your doors and windows.
But once the insects have entered your home, the white wine vinegar spray is a recommended deterrent to pests.

The site explains that the smell of vinegar will scare away ants.
