Mark Twain famously said that “truth is stranger than? fiction “and I ran into some historical reading contribution has recently brought to mind. In fact, when I started reading, I checked several times to make sure I was not reading a satire site.
The worst thing you can eat in the morning?
In his recent book, adrenal Changing your diet my doctor talks about the importance of timing intake of protein and carbohydrates to support optimal cortisol, insulin and other hormone function .
His advice is to eat healthy sources of protein in the morning, a small amount of carbohydrates at lunch and a moderate amount of healthy carbohydrates at night. The reasoning behind this is that carbohydrates increase insulin and affect cortisol, which is what you want at night before bed, but not what they want in the morning.
According to statistics, many of us are doing the exact opposite of this and the consumption of foods rich in carbohydrates and sugar in the morning (and the rest of the day) and eat most of our proteins at night . (Probably not, if you’re reading this, but history is fascinating)
I’ll talk more about the research behind synchronization of the protein in a minute, but I had asked, people consume historically in the morning, when I had no obesity and chronic health problems we have today, and how we can start eating things like cereal, donuts, bagels and the like for breakfast?
truth still boggles my mind …
The strange story of cereal …
Bran Flakes and Corn Flakes cereals and the like are considered a breakfast ” healthy “for many …
What if I told you that they were created by a doctor in the late 1800s to prevent people masturbate? (= Truth is stranger than fiction)
Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (Kellogg cereal behind the name) was the chief medical officer in a popular sanatorium where he served his patients a vegetarian diet of bland foods because he believed that spicy or sweet foods increased passion and sexual desire. Celebrity guests include Mary Todd Lincoln, Henry Ford and Amelia Earhart.
To his credit, Dr. Kellogg did recognize the role of probiotics in the intestinal health (enemas suggested yogurt) and claimed that smoking causes cancer long before science discovered the link. He also believed in exercise and drink enough water. He was ahead of its time in many ways, but also made some very strange contributions to modern medicine in ways that can not be expected …
Here is where it gets really weird:
One of the pillars of the diet served his patients was a soft food, roasted corn that was discovered by chance by toasting stale, slightly modly grains …. flakes made various grains and served them because he found they are a anaphrodisiac (to decrease sexual desire of those who ate). His brother Will Keith Kellogg had a knack for marketing and finally made Corn Flakes and names Kellogg® house marketing this accidental discovery
Along with his brother, Will Kellogg, John developed the first commercial flake cereal. Its cereal flakes Granose, hit the market in 1896. developed a separation between the two brothers. After 22 years, Will was separated from John and the sanatorium. Then he joined the Battle Creek roasted corn Flake Company, which became known as the Kellogg Company in 1925. ( source )
Another random fact: Charles William post (of fame announcement Cereal®) was a patient of Kellogg and Sylvester Graham, Graham Cracker® fame was one of the first factors influence Kellogg …
Back to modern science for a second and this fact makes sense- carbohydrate-rich foods, especially in the morning, they affect rhythms of cortisol and other hormones (including sex hormones).
But why he was so focused on Kellogg decrease sexual desire?
of all accounts that I found and his own writings, Dr. Kellogg took the side of their faith that requires the purity of the body to the extreme. He believed that sex itself was bad and harmful and that masturbation was even worse. He and his wife, Ella Eaton, married but never consummated their marriage (according to his writings), sleeping in separate apartments and adoption of their children (who fostered 42 children and adopted 8).
In one of his books, Kellogg says, “nor plague, nor war, nor smallpox, have produced such disastrous results for mankind as the pernicious habit of masturbation such victim dies. literally, by his own hand. “
also defended the practices as piercing foreskin with wire to prevent erections and burning the clitoris with carbolic acid to avoid excitement. It gets crazier …
Kellogg was an advocate of circumcision without anesthesia (even in older children and adults who were caught masturbating) because:
The operation must be performed by a surgeon without administering an anesthetic, as the brief pain attending the operation will have a salutary effect on the mind, especially if you can connect with the idea of punishment, as may well be in some cases. The pain continues for several weeks interrupts practice, and if they had not done before too firmly fixed, can be forgotten and not resumed.
It was one of the first promoters of circumcision for non-religious reasons in the US (In order to stop masturbation) and along with other early promoters it was an integral part in making widespread circumcision during this time, although many people do not know why the trend began to start. In fact, in the 18700s, only 1% of the adult male population in the US was circumcised and in 1971 this number was over 90% ( source ) although this number is rapidly decreasing. The practice of circumcision of newborns without anesthesia also originated in part of the teachings of this time.
Kellogg theories seemed to be based, at least in part on the work of Sylvester Graham, who was a vegetarian diet reformer famous for creating graham flour and graham crackers ®.
Graham was also an advocate of sexual abstinence, especially masturbation, which he regarded as an evil which inevitably led to madness. In his opinion, all excitement was unhealthy, and spices were some of the ingredients forbidden in your diet. As a result of their dietary recommendations they were inevitably bland, prompting Grahamites consumption of large amounts of graham crackers, graham own invention.
large-scale commercialization by leading cereal this time (Kellogg and post) shot to fame breakfast cereal and familiarity. In fact, now the cereal meal is considered by many primary breakfast (at least in the US).
breakfast cereals So it has some unusual origins, to say the least, but the religion of the 19th century and politics aside, is it really healthy to eat cereal in the morning? healthier
thing to eat in the morning?
grain has been a popular choice for breakfast for over a hundred years, although the origins are not so rooted in science that we often think. It is the product of this $ 25 + billion a year market a selection of healthy breakfast?
You’ve probably seen the statistics that those who eat breakfast tend to weigh less ( although current studies are disproving this ), but that still leaves the question of what eat for breakfast. The studies tend to focus on carbohydrates compared to the protein. Neither it is bad and both are necessary, but research suggests that the timing of each is vitally important.
Dr. Alan Christianson suggests a protein-rich breakfast (with vegetables) and carbohydrates they consume at night or after exercise. His Research has shown that this type of timing carbohydrate is compatible with the natural rhythm of cortisol in the body and promotes healthy weight and sleep:
Your body uses cortisol to rescue from low blood sugar. This makes carbohydrates a tool you can use to help regulate cortisol. Start your day with 25-35 grams of protein and 20-50 grams end of carbohydrates of high quality. Great options include paleo-friendly sources like sweet potatoes, turnips, squash, beets, and rutabagas. Having later in the day helps not only cortisol, but a lot of weight regulating hormones such as leptin, ghrelin and adiponectin.
Interestingly, this is advice that body builders (people with typically low body fat and healthy relations hip waist) have known for years:
The first time you wake up every morning, your body is ready to burn fat. The worst thing you could do right now is have a classic American breakfast, including foods such as juice, toast, or cereal. Cortisol, a stress hormone, increases during the night while sleeping and peaks at about 7:00 a.m. left alone, which helps burn fat, but when they feed themselves a lot of carbohydrates, cortisol promote storage fat like insulin can. By waiting until cortisol levels naturally fall later in the day, then strength training before eating carbohydrates, to maximize the ability of carbohydrates’ to benefit your physical and minimize the potential for harm him.
But what about the carbs you eat before exercise routine One Now? However, we remember what we said about the release of insulin and fat burning. Eating carbohydrates before training reduces the amount of fat can be burned during the session, and honestly, you do not need them. The truth is that your body can function very well in protein and fat for even more training session gut-busting (provided you eat enough of these nutrients, which more later).
Another consideration is the carbohydrates have effects on the nervous system. Without them, the sympathetic nervous system, the body’s “fight or flight” stress is underway. To think clearly and react quickly, and can even recruit muscle fibers more efficiently. Eating carbohydrates dampens this response. You know how you feel weak and can not concentrate after a meal? You do not want to be in that condition before lifting weights, and only takes a small portion of carbohydrates to impair its performance.
Along with the consumption of carbohydrates at the optimum time of day, the doctor. Christianson offers another important key to balancing the rhythms of cortisol: exposure to the sun in the morning and avoid the blue light at night
His theory is that our constant exposure to artificial light, especially at night, it has affected our natural cortisol rhythms. . It seems to be as fat cells also have their own rhythm that continue even when isolated in a laboratory dish viscous cycle.
Christianson recommends 30-50 grams of protein for breakfast (no carbs) and 30 minutes of sunlight or light with a lux 10,000 or greater light an hour wake up.
recommend read his book for the full protocol, but highlights the importance of consuming sources of real food protein and carbohydrates in the correct time of day and optimization cortisol rhythms with light as a way to balance hormones.
carbohydrates may be important for the balance of hormones, but the morning is probably not the best time to consume them. Although they are a common food breakfast cereals are not necessarily a healthy and certainly have an unusual past!
