Chikungunya Can Kill: Here’s A List Of Symptoms Almost Everyone Is Overlooking

Despite the assurances of Delhi’s Health Minister, Satyendra Jain, that chikungunya cannot cause death because Google told him so; a patient succumbed to the disease on Wednesday . Aside from the fact that he sounds disturbingly similar to Donald Trump with such statements, there’s growing evidence and a list of casualties that also proves he’s got it wrong.

Chikungunya is nowhere near as deadly as malaria or dengue , but the rising incidence of the disease across India, especially in the Delhi region is a cause for concern because of the high risk of complications in immune-compromised and elderly patients. Most of the victims so far have been senior citizens, but this does not mean that younger adults are safe from chikungunya deaths. Take the case of 22-year-old Isha, from Kabir Nagar , who passed away on 1st September because of cardiac arrest resulting from chikungunya complications.

As the number of recorded cases of chikungunya in Delhi continues to rise to almost 1,500, it’s time to take stock of the situation and recognize the risk of complications from the disease in vulnerable groups like diabetics and hypertensive patients.

To better protect yourself and your family from chikungunya, make yourself aware of symptoms that are often overlooked. Seek treatment promptly if you have the smallest reason to suspect chikungunya, as timely treatment can make a world of difference in patient outcomes.

There are several symptoms of chikungunya, but the most common symptoms are fever and joint pain. The fever is also likely to break and then return for a couple of days.

Unlike the fever caused by dengue, chikungunya fever poses a negligible risk of hemorrhagic complications. Most people suffering from this disease experience very strong joint pain or stiffness but no joint swelling. Chikungunya joint pain affects multiple joints and often occurs in the smaller joints such as the wrists and ankles, although it can also occur in the shoulders. This joint pain often lasts for weeks but it can even linger on for months.

Some of the other less common symptoms of chikungunya are muscle & ligament pain and fatigue. A person suffering from chikungunya may also experience headaches and nausea, in some cases, they might also develop a rash that is characterized by raised, spotted lesions.

According to the WHO (World Health Organization), this condition can cause neurological and heart complications and in older people, chikungunya can cause serious complications that can be fatal.
