The problem of plastic water bottles …
What seems like a harmless water bottle plastic contain hormone disrupting chemicals such as BPA and phthalates. BPA has been shown to cause hormonal imbalance in the body and has even been linked to several types of cancer, obesity, miscarriage, infertility and neurological disorders.
Phthalates have been banned in many parts of the world and are especially in relation to men and children, as they have been linked to lower testosterone and male infertility.
The price of convenience
as damaging as plastics are for us individually, we are all against unwanted exposure worldwide plastic pollution.
plastic water bottles certainly are inexpensive, disposable and convenient, but they are also terrible for our ecosystem. In fact, many of the negative health effects attributed to the harmful plastic components can come from growing burden of our planet plastic.
Many tons of plastic waste are dumped into the ocean each year . The combination of UV light and salt of the ocean cause these plastics break down and release BPA, phthalates, PCBs and DDT in the ocean water. These chemicals are absorbed by the small marine life and eventually work their way up the food supply.
Indeed, experts now say that any ocean in the world is free of this plastic pollution and several have said that this is the issue of abandonment of our ocean and our planet today. plastic chemicals are even less than 30 feet of ice in Antarctica, a place not even inhabited by humans and so far not thought to be contaminated plastic waste.
Why is it a problem?
plastic consumption continues to increase at a dramatic pace …
billion plastic bags are discarded each year and these bags can take up to a thousand years to decompose. During this time, they are releasing these chemical hormones that cause disturbances in the ocean, groundwater and soil.
Even now, there are an estimated 46,000 pieces of plastic floating on every square mile of ocean.
pace that the plastic used and discarded and the length of time the plastic takes to biodegrade, it seems logical that the excessive use of plastic could become the greatest health and environmental problem of our time.
Alternatives to plastic water bottles
water bottles are not the only source of plastic waste, but are an important source of exposure plastic. disposable water bottles can leach your hormone disrupting chemicals right on the water you drink them. Heat or light exposure can accelerate this process, as the amount of time that water goes into the bottle
We can do a lot for our health and the environment by making two simple switches :.
There are so many great options for now reusable water bottles. I use mine a day for lemon water in the morning shakes and herbal tea throughout the day, and water.
In recent years, I have tried a couple of plastic- quite different reusable water bottles and these are my favorites (in order of how much I love them):
1. Hydro Flask
Hydro is my favorite bottle reusable water bottle by far . It is not only stainless steel and BPA free, but also vacuum-sealed and insulated so it is amazing in regulating temperature. I was surprised I could keep my cold ice water for 24 hours (with ice still floating in it!) And coffee or hot tea for 12 hours.
I have both a large bottle of water from the mouth and a smaller bottle for hot drinks and I like both use it all the time. The only drawback? Because of the vacuum sealed insulating layer, they can not be put in the dishwasher.
2. Lifefactory glass bottle
This lifefactory glass bottle is another favorite but not isolated, and the Hydro Flask and some others. It is dishwasher safe, which is a great advantage. I do not trust the glass so when I’m with my kids, but if I’m on my own, I love this bottle and it will not leak.
Klean Kanteen 3.
The original reusable water bottle I tried it and I liked it enough to get one for everyone on my Christmas list this year. I still love Klean Kanteen my basic steel although it is not isolated and not keep drinks hot or cold. Also, if hot beverage is poured into it, they prepare to burn your hand. The positive side?
still I love my Klean, and are reusable friendly budget option.
4. Water Bottle Insulated Cayman
The Cayman only comes in one size that I have found (about 17 ounces) making it a little small for I prefer a bottle of water. Like the Hydro bottle, which keeps hot or cold liquids for at least 12 hours. It fits into the regular holder, which makes it ideal to take in the car or on the side of the backpack while traveling and often prefer this if I’m on the road.
If Haven ‘t already, please consider writing switching to one of these alternatives to plastic water bottles (and replace plastic bags while you’re at it!). The convenience of plastic is not worth the consequences to health or the environment.
