Bed bugs feed on cats, dogs, other pets and humans and are immune to pesticides. This immunity to pesticides has caused their numbers to increase and pest outbreaks become more frequent in cities around the world.
The Environmental Protection Agency said: "The common bed bug has long been a plague: it feeds on blood, causes itchy bites and generally irritates its human hosts."
They are small, oval, brown insects and have flat bodies the size of an apple seed.
Bed bugs can enter the house undetected through used luggage, clothes, beds and sofas and other items. Due to their shape, they can fit in small spaces, so it is impossible to find them.
