I recently shared Instagram a photo of my youngest daughter and many commentators asked about the metal bottle was using. I realized I had never written about the type of bottles and glasses that use in our home for our children.
Why is not plastic?
We used BPA-free plastic options for our children since they were born and I’m special care when they are very young to avoid plastic. As I explained earlier, many plastics contain endocrine disrupting chemicals can be especially harmful to pregnant women and children.
The best-known plastic chemical is bisphenol A or BPA, which has estrogen mimicking the body properties, but there are several other chemicals based plastic that can be so harmful, so plastic products that are simply labeled as BPA are not necessarily safe. In fact, BPA free products may still contain more harmful as chemicals:
- Phthalates – related problems suppression system and immune hormone (especially in children and men)
- BPS and BPF – bisphenol S or bisphenol F have similar (and possibly worse hormone) that mimic properties of alteration and are often found in BPA free products
- polyvinyl chloride – related to cancer and birth defects
These plastic chemicals are also found in large quantities in groundwater, most water supplies and even on the ice in Antarctica, indicating that plastic pollution is much more widespread than once and although potentially much more dangerous.
plastic and BPA Bottles and Sippy Cups
whole family avoids plastics and we all use alternatives to bottled water of plastic, but I am especially vigilant about free plastic options for babies and young children, as they are at increased risk of exposure to chemicals plastic.
I have studied dozens of alternatives to baby bottles and normal plastic sippy cups and found nine options that I feel comfortable using with my own children (ranked starting with my favorite). At least the first six months, the nurse of children exclusively, so my preferences lean more toward sippy cups bottles, but have included baby bottles that we used at times when I pumped and work wonderfully well …
My favorite brand of sippy cups and my young children use most frequently. This bottle is stainless steel with a lid and straw steel silicone or nipple so it is completely free of plastic. It is the only completely plastic free choice that I found and held pretty well. I put ours in the dishwasher without any problem. The only drawback is that older children may bite through silicone nipple caps for babies (although these are replaceable). We have several of these natural steel Pura Kiki .
Born Free Glass Bottles
When we used bottles, I used they are born free glass bottles with silicone nipples . My babies did well with them (after six months) and as they are glass and easy to clean too.
Bottles Lifefactory glass
Make Lifefactory glass bottles and bottles for older children or adults that are easy to clean and silicone on the outside of the glass it appears to reduce the risk of breakage if they drop. They are also easy to clean and can be put in the dishwasher. We have two of them (a bottle and a regular bottle) and I’ve never had problems with any of them.
The EcoVessel is a favorite with my older children, because it insulates and keeps drinks hot or cold for a long time. My only caution with which the mark is not put milk or juice in it, as there is a place at the top that can be collected and get an outside odor of these. I keep water in the cup. This is not dishwasher safe.
My husband and I used bottles Klean Kanteen for years, and they also make bottles stainless steel and reusable bottles for children more age . We have the stainless steel bottles are dishwasher safe and older children use them for sports and camping.
Sprouts Green Glass
This sippy cup is glass with a silicone spout and sippy but an outer plastic coating to protect the glass. In theory, it is great, but my only complaint is that the top is difficult to get in and often escapes if not put in exactly correctly.
glass bottles Avent
Another great option glass bottle for babies. We used glass bottles with nipples Avent natural for babies and breastfed babies, even seem to take these bottles easily. They are dishwasher safe and easy to clean.
Organic Kidz Bottles
The glass of my daughter was actually holding the image but, ironically, is not my favorite because it has a plastic lid . I like that they are dishwasher safe and steel so they are unbreakable, but do not love the plastic lid, even if does not touch the liquid.
Sporter insurance Bottles
These bottles are dishwasher safe and easy to clean stainless steel. My kids love it and have each child a different color. My only complaint is the small amount of plastic at the top and I prefer the Pura bottles for this reason.
free plastic at home
When we’re home, stainless steel is used drinking cups instead of bottles and these steel cups safe small dishwasher are my favorite .
