3 Powerful Holistic Cures For Any Cold

Ayurveda

The practice of healing ayurveda secular India visits colds and flu as signs of an imbalance in your dosha, or biological energy. Rx for the treatment

  • Reduce consumption of all dairy products like yogurt, cheese and milk, and foods prepared with sugar and oils, which tend to increase kapha and mucus. Even the intake of herbs and spices that warm, like cinnamon, ginger, pippali (known in the US as long pepper), basil, clove, and mint to soothe kapha and vata. They toss them in warm vegetable soups and stews.

Try mixing hot water with a half teaspoon of tulsi and a pinch of ginger, lemon juice and honey to taste fully squeezed. “Mixing hot tea, dried flavors, and bitter reduces vata and kapha,” says Toomey. Naturopathy

The body can heal itself when given the opportunity, according to naturopathy. “Naturopaths are the underlying obstacles that prevent the body to heal and then prescribe remedies to clear the way,” says Nick Buratovich, NMD, a professor of naturopathic medicine at the University of Southwest Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, Arizona. To help fight colds and flus, a naturopathic physician can mix conventional medical practices (such as performing a physical exam) with natural treatment strategies (such as prescribing herbs or vitamins).

Rx for Prevention

Recent research also suggests that taking AHCC, an extract of medicinal mushrooms can prevent flu if 500 mg per day are taken.
  • Give your body a lot of TLC. “extra sleep and sufficient hydration get overlooked in cold and flu season until after you get sick,” says Buratovich. Drink half your weight in ounces of water a day, that’s about nine 8-ounce glasses for a person of 150 pounds.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

In traditional Chinese medicine, good health requires free flowing qi, or vital energy. The disease results when one of the ways of qi body (called meridians) is blocked. Colds and flu result of an attack of “wind” that affects the lung meridian. Depending on your symptoms, the attack may either (common cold) or Wind-Heat (flu) or be-cold wind. If you are experiencing chills, dry cough, headache, body aches, and have clear runny nose, a doctor of TCM would say it has wind-cold. A wind-heat disease, however, comes with fever, constant thirst, sore throat, runny nose sweating and yellow or green.

Rx for Prevention

  • build your endurance. Many formulas based on Chinese herbs can strengthen your immune system. Try Gejie Ta Bu Wan (take three to five capsules three times a day) and Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan (take eight to 10 tiny pills three times a day.)

Rx for the treatment

  • Get acupuncture at the first sign of a cold or flu. “Points along the meridians of the lung and large intestine activate the immune function,” says Donald Phillips, MSTOM, Lac, Pacific University of Oriental Medicine in San Diego.
  • Perform self-massage in the following key acupressure: Li4 (located below the fleshy part between your right thumb and index finger, gently press the area with the other thumb for one minute), Lu7 (two fingers above the wrist crease on the in- side of the forearm, in line with the thumb, press gently for a minute), and LI20 (the center of the groove on the outer edge of each nostril; press each point for a minute).
  • Try a herbal formula. Gan Mao Qing Re Chong Ji wind-cold (take four tablets three times a day) and Yin Qiao Jie Du Pian Wind-heat (four to six pills three or four times a day, and only during the three first days of a cold or flu).
  • Drinking five glasses of hot lemon water every day (squeeze a fresh lemon per cup). This replaces the lost fluid and gives your immune system a jolt of vitamin C. Another food cure: Combine six green onions (white parts only) with a quarter cup of brown sugar and two cups of water. Bring to a boil; Green onions help move congestion and out of the lungs.
